If you've tried growing tomatoes in indian summers and watched them wilt by April, you're not alone. The problem isn't you — it's that most gardening advice online is written for 20°C weather, not 42°C.
Here's what actually works.
Pick the Right Variety
Not all tomatoes are built for Indian heat. Look for heat-tolerant varieties like Nidhi-203, Arka Vikas, or Pusa Ruby. These are bred for Indian conditions — they fruit even when temperatures cross 38°C.
Water Deeply, Not Frequently
In peak summer, shallow watering evaporates before roots can absorb it. Water deeply every alternate day in the morning. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings — tomatoes hate waterlogged roots.
Shade at the Right Time
Don't shade all day. Tomatoes need a minimum of 6 hours of sun. Use a 30-40% shade net only between 12pm–4pm when the heat is most intense. Morning and evening sun is fine.
Use Mulch to Lock Moisture
Cover the soil surface with dry leaves, coco peat, or newspaper. This cuts water loss by 40% and keeps root temperature down.
Feed Every 2 Weeks
During fruiting, tomatoes are hungry. Use a balanced NPK fertilizer or compost tea every 14 days. Deficiency shows as yellowing lower leaves — act fast.
Tomatoes are forgiving if you get these basics right. Start with a heat-tolerant, water-smart variety, and you'll have fruit by week 8.
