Monsoon brings relief from the heat and plenty of natural watering. But it also brings humidity, fungal disease, and root rot if you plant the wrong things. Here's your seasonal planting guide.
Gourds and Cucurbits — Ridge gourd, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, and cucumber all thrive in monsoon humidity. Fast-growing, high-yielding, and perfect for trellises on balconies.
Leafy Greens — Spinach, amaranth, and methi love monsoon moisture. Sow directly, thin seedlings, harvest in 3–4 weeks.
Beans and Legumes — French beans, cowpea, and cluster beans grow fast and fix nitrogen in your soil. Great for pots with support sticks.
Herbs — Coriander, basil, and mint all perform well in the monsoon. Coriander especially loves the cool-wet combination. Skip These in Monsoon**
Tomatoes — Prone to fungal blight in high humidity. Wait for October–November.
Onion and Garlic — Bulb crops rot in waterlogged soil. Plant post-monsoon.
Carrots and Radish — Root crops need well-drained soil. Monsoon waterlogging splits and rots them.
Chillies — Can handle light rain, but prolonged humidity causes flower drop. Better in winter.
Ensure pots have drainage holes — standing water kills roots in 48 hours. Avoid overhead watering on rainy days. Watch for fungal spots on leaves and remove affected leaves immediately.
